It has a harsh means and persuasive argument. Theanti-war theme and serious tone are effective at portraying war ashorrid and devastating. I felt overpowered by blood, guts and decease.Although my reaction hasnt changed much through numerous readings, myemotional feelings live more intense with each reading. This poemmakes me feel as if I am right there watching the soldier who cannotfasten his masque fast enough and suffers the full effects of deadlygas. but someone fluid is yelling out and stumbling. This poem alsomakes me look beyond the death and question the pain inflicted on themothers who kissed their sons goodbye as they went to defend theircountry. I imagine the mother receiving word her son has died andbeing told how noble and nationalistic his death was. In his last moments,the soldier and his family becom e victims of The old imposition.
